=== Economics === The International Narcotics Control Board estimated 11.5 short tons (10.4 t) of oxycodone were manufactured worldwide in 1998; by 2007 this figure had grown to 75.2 short tons (68.2 t). United States accounted for 82% of consumption in 2007 at 51.6 short tons (46.8 t). Canada, Germany, Australia, and France combined accounted for 13% of consumption in 2007. In 2010, 1.3 short tons (1.2 t) of oxycodone were illegally manufactured using a fake pill imprint. This accounted for 0.8% of consumption. These illicit tablets were later seized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to the International Narcotics Control Board. === Optic nerve blood supply === The optic nerve head, or prelaminar disc, primarily receives blood from the peripapillary choroidal arterioles, which stem from the elliptical anastomotic annulus connected to the circle of Zinn-Haller. The circle of Zinn-Haller is formed by branches of the lateral and posterior ciliary arteries. Beyond this region, different segments of the optic nerve are supplied by various networks of arteries and capillaries originating from the ophthalmic artery and the central retinal artery. The Zinn-Haller circle also provides blood to the thin, sieve-like section of the eye's outer layer and the optic nerve fibers within it through small, inward-facing arteries. The area just behind this layer in the optic nerve is vascularized by small returning arteries and minute blood vessels that arise from the eye's surrounding circulation and the main ophthalmic artery, interweaving through the nerve's supporting fibers. The parts of the optic nerve located within the eye socket and the canal it traverses receive blood from small arteries branching off the primary network surrounding the eye, as well as from the central retinal artery. Fluorescein angiographic studies have demonstrated that during the acute phase of NAION, there is a delay in blood flow to the optic disc, suggesting a potential impairment in the arteries directly supplying it. In December 2022, the British government announced that it planned to open the Independent Inquiry relating to Afghanistan to investigate extrajudicial killings that took place between 2010 and 2013, during the War in Afghanistan. This followed a detailed BBC Panorama investigation that found members of the SAS "repeatedly killed detainees and unarmed men in suspicious circumstances". Panorama spoke to witnesses who alleged that operatives justified the killings of unarmed persons by leaving weapons at the scenes of the shootings and that SAS squadrons competed '"with each other to get the most kills". According to the investigation, officers of the UK Special Forces were concerned over the number of reports of detainees being killed after reaching for hidden weapons. Allegedly, several raids ended with the deaths of more people than weapons recovered. The BBC visited the sites of some raids and heard from ballistics experts who interpreted the bullet patterns present as more indicative "of execution-style killings rather than firefights". A formal internal review was opened at the time, but evidence was never passed to military police. The inquiry was launched in March 2023, to be chaired by Lord Justice Haddon-Cave. In September 2024, an internal Ministry of Defence document written in 2019 was presented to the inquiry that concluded that the BBC Panorama allegations were "broadly accurate".

By June the system was working well, although Bainbridge-Bell proved to be so skeptical of success that Watt eventually returned him to the RRS and replaced him with Nick Carter. The Tizard Committee visited the site on 15 June to examine the team's progress. Watt secretly arranged for a Vickers Valentia to fly nearby, and years later insisted that he saw the echoes on the display, but no one else recalls seeing these. Watt decided not to return to the RRS with the rest of the Tizard group and stayed with the team for another day. With no changes made to the equipment, on 17 June the system was turned on and immediately provided returns from an object at 17 mi (27 km). === Otto Mostyn === Otto Mostyn (Roger Barclay) is Henry's godfather, and a fellow classmate of Charles Hanani from Oxford alongside Norton. A sinister, calculating businessman, Otto takes interest in Harper due to her cunning and ruthlessness, and agrees to provide seed funding to LeviathanAlpha, the hedge fund she is starting with Petra Koenig. Otto, Norton, and Aurore are also in a secret cabal to advance their interests via the government. Petra calls Otto after learning that Harper committed insider trading by acting on confidential information she overheard to short Pierpoint. Otto summons Harper to a meeting, where instead of reprimanding her, he tells her he wants her to succeed him in running his investment fund. Harper and Petra ultimately decide to call off the short and end their partnership with Otto to keep their fund above-board, but Harper later teams up with Otto to start her own fund dedicated to shorting corrupt companies over whom she and Otto would have leverage. In series 4, Otto becomes a member of the House of Lords and hopes to obtain a peerage. He puts increasingly strict constraints on Harper's trades at his fund, not wanting her to jeopardize his political connections; she eventually cuts ties with Otto. However, 9 November is also the anniversary of the execution of Robert Blum following the 1848 Vienna revolts, the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch and the infamous Kristallnacht pogroms of the Nazis in 1938.
